Virginia, Carolina's, Georgia...Berkeley Plantation and the Pukey Lodge

Saturday, May 3rd.  10 am Virginia 20 C

We spent the night with the Enns' and thought that checking in with the security before entering the community was a neat thing.  They live right on a river and can go fishing whenever they please!
We all had a good sleep and a good breakfast before heading off again.  What a nice break and wonderful hospitality.  Beautiful family with a heart for all people...we could talked on and on.  Maybe we'll see them again in Canada next time if they come to visit a new niece or nephew that is on their way :)

Did you know that Virginia is the state for lovers?  Well... it is!

Travel stops are great places and here you can see that they are also very educational and serious places to expand on your knowledge of the area.
First travel stop that offers free cookies and chocolate eggs... we like this part of the US even more :)

These tourist stops are more down to earth and not as fancy, but very clean and nice.
Oh look, a walking trail!  Oh, you're supposed to look for George Washington's head... oh my!

" It was here in the year 1621 to 1622, the first Bourbon Whisky was distilled in America.  At Berkeley Plantation and Hundred Master George Thorpe, Episcopal Preacher wrote as follows ... " A brew of corn and maize was made, was much better than British Ale.  The people over here were not sick in body but sick in mind, and two drinks a day of this fiery water made things all right". "

Entering the Berkeley Plantation.  Many plantations along this route, but we choose
this one to wander through.  Historic Route 5 between Williamsburg and Richmond, Virginia
A few trees bore these markers, but no others.  Made us wonder what was tied to them.

Entry to the plantation houses

The first Thanksgiving 1619
This plantation has lots of history tied to it.  Go to HERE to find out more
 http://www.berkeleyplantation.com/
Look at the canon ball stuck in the side of the building!
Berkeley Plantation was the birth place of  Benjamin Harrison, a signer on the Declaration of Independence and also President William Henry Harrison.
We paid for the tour and didn't realize until later that we weren't supposed to take photos, opps!

"Taps" was also composed while the troops were camped at Berkeley.
At one point, a man bought the plantation and used it as a barn.  It survived and is now being restored again.  The family lives upstairs and does tours of the cellar and main floor and grounds.  It is no longer in the Harrison family though.

Highlight for Mei is always the frogs, snakes and salamanders, or anything creepy crawly.
Record books of their slaves.  Seemed like some of the slaves were even siblings or children of the owners.

Many Presidents were entertained here, and many meetings were held here.

Beautiful vegetation and old trees that we have never seen before.

Hitching Post

The area from the houses to the river was dug out by hand into tiers.

They were getting ready for a wedding

A cardinal for Loila

 Tricking Daddy with the water!
The James River, Virginia.
We all were thinking about how large the rivers were...no wonder they fought for control of them.  If you controlled the river, you could win the war.
Also imagining how it would be to try to swim them to freedom.

Back on the road again, with more flowers that Mei found.

Good thing I'm not that big, or there'd be no room for me!

Virginia Peanuts!
Peanuts everywhere!  In bins, in pots...boiling for a quick snack. Peanuts, peanuts...everywhere!
Jo finally got a chance to drive ... through North Carolina, where the traffic wasn't as heavy.  Beautiful trees inbetween the highways.  Lots of poppys and tulips too.

I don't think we ever used any of these coupons, but they could be handy. We did use them as reference for Travelocity reviews on the motels, etc.

If the vending machine ate your money, you could always dry your tears with the toilet paper and then demand your money back from their suggestion style box.

Pretty quick driving and we're already into South Carolina.

Better than collecting cans on the side of the road in Canada

Getting a little tired and silly

Our first regret would soon be coming... as darkness descends and the eyelids get droopy, you don't always make good decisions...stay tuned to the next blog post!
