Homeward Bound ~ Florida to Tennessee

Sunday May 18th
Our goal is to get to Clarksville, TN tonight 732 miles, estimated driving time 10.5 hours

It took us awhile to pack up, so we didn't leave the townhouse until 10 :20 am.
We like rest stops and the signs they deem necessary

Jo was still feeling the effects of her sunburn... chills and swollen legs.  Her legs were so sore and would swell up quickly so it made walking difficult.  She's promised to never get a sunburn like that again ~ no fun at all!
The peeling has begun...turning amphibian

Wonderful cookies we found...but they are a product of Canada that we have never seen here!

Found these in a Dollar Store...very yummy ... and...

... The sweet potato fries had a Bible verse!

Leaving the townhouse in Oak Water

Girls liked this sign.  The bubbles were all in the wrong places and very funny.

One of the many Pro Life and Pro Fatherhood signs we saw

Billboards for car accidents, etc were fun to find

Such yummy jerky!

Rolling hills with trees and palms
Some cattle, a few horses.  The countryside looks more like what we are used to... just more GREEN!
Western shops ~ again, maybe next time we can stop for Kate's sake.
Retirement communities
Florida Citrus Centres  Lots of signs and then gators
Pretty pink flowers
Palms are getting smaller in Georgia

Rest stop picnics are the best when you have a balloon friend.

Some of us "just need 10 minutes"
Saw 2 roll overs on the #75
Saw some orange groves and a vineyard

Pecans everywhere
Pecans and Peanuts and Peaches in GA everywhere.
Pecans $8.63
We've noticed a few things ~ there are not many vehicles marked as a private business.  In Manitoba, if you see a truck, it will usually have a business name on it.  There are older vehicles driving around here though too.  Many with dents.
Georgia seemed to have lots of billboards (way over the treetops!) advertising for "Spa's" and other adult type things.

We're starting to get used to the 8 lane traffic going 1 way!  yikes!
We watched a beautiful sunset near Atlanta, Georgia.  Tennessee is lush and hilly from what we can tell in the dark.  The road is very windy, with a speed limit of 55.

A real disappointment was that we drove through Tennessee Smokey Mountains when it was dark.  Maybe next time we'll plan this journey differently.

Finally in Florida!

Sunday May 4th Georgia  11 am 28C
Econolodge Motel Room... GROSS!
Harvey's Supermarket had some really cheap produce... collard greens, kale, mustard adn sweet potatoes.  All on trays with saran wrap.   Potatoes were expensive.  Meat by the pound.  Finally found Lactose Free Milk.

At 1:30 am, you don't always make good choices.  While I did check for bed bugs, we missed some other signs in our room until after we had already checked in.  I placed some pillows strategically to cover up some mysterious-stuff-that-looked-a lot-like-throw-up so Mei could sleep unaware.  The Econolodge in Brunswick GA for $61 was not worth the $61.  The floor and walls were sticky with what looked like someone had shaken a pop bottle and let it explode.  Tiles were falling off.  Vomit down the side of the bed.  Dirt on the floor, as well as someone's hair elastics. Hope they managed to have a good hair day even without them.  Looked like the maid had not even been in the room.

Brunswick Flash Foods Fuel $75 ~ our Credit Card was denied here.  She said Georgia is quite bad for that.  When I phoned our company, they had flagged it, then noticed we had called in earlier to say we were traveling and had "unflagged" it.  When, nice to know that they noticed?

EEEEWWWW

Gross!  Thankful I had covered it up so no one saw it until the morning.
The Econolodge did have the continental breakfast, which was not too bad.  We met some nice folks traveling back "north" to Carolina from Florida... snow birds :)   We were also introduced to GRITS by Quaker Oats.  Same type of package as instant oatmeal.  Some eat it like oatmeal with sugar, some with butter and salt and pepper.
We slept for 6 hours and then just wanted to "get outta dodge!"...
Now onto other things, like "find food" as we are getting close to our Florida destination and the townhouse rental.  On the plus side ~ we've seen our first palm trees in Georgia ~ small but palms !

Went for a grocery shop at Harvey's Supermarket.  They were having a big sale, so that was a pleasant experience. You also don't need a quarter or a loonie to take a shopping cart!

Harvey's Supermarket had some really cheap produce... collard greens, kale, mustard and sweet potatoes.  All on trays with saran wrap.   Potatoes were expensive.  Meat by the pound.  Finally found Lactose Free Milk. Most employees and even managers didn't know about Lactose Free.  We did find a sign advertising "GLUTEN FREE" and when we looked ~ it was ~ Iceberg Lettuce!  HA

Gregg's being called Sugar, Baby a lot... not that he minds...We have also noticed that we are often the minority when we have been stopping for fuel.  Accents are wonderful music to our ears!
Florida has Agricultural Inspection Stations.
1:30 pm 31C or 87F

Free Florida grapefruit juice or orange juice... hit the spot!  Yes, free.  We like this place already!
Also FREE, a Shutterfly photo book that you can do online...oh yea, let's grab one of those for memory making.
Mei found a flower on the ground and I got to wear it

More bridges over their wide rivers

Believe it or Not museum we drove by

Saint Augustine Florida ~ quirky town that we wished we could stop and explore.  Lots of pirate theme and Believe it or Not and tour buses, etc.
A pirate ship in the dock!

"It's 1 pm and 30C and we're trying to decide which beach to go to.  We were just going to have a picnic... then we decided we should go for a swim.  We couldn't find anywhere to change, so we just snuck around in the Yukon with towels.  We all caught a wave but Mom.  Mom didn't go swimming.  We found some shells for souvenirs."

Look girls !  The Atlantic ocean!

There was a man using a big fan motor to fly around in his kite and do loop-d-loo's.

Flagler Beach, north of Daytona Beach.

First dip in the Atlantic Ocean

Gregg just couldn't resist buying some boogie boards.  One made it through the afternoon !

Takes awhile longer to drive along the beach, but it was so enjoyable for us prairie folk.
We took the A1A after detouring around Jacksonville.

"We went to the ocean and it was awesome ~ there were waves and sand!  We surfed the waves!  Daddy broke the big boogie board and we collected shells.  There were some very small shells and they were alive.  They burrowed back into the sand when the waves went back and the little birds would try to eat them. They were the size of my fingernail.  This is so much fun. "

Flagler Beach

An empty luncheon meat container made nice sand bricks.
" I caught a wave Mom!"
Comparing our shells and which ones were different from the Pacific Ocean to Atlantic Ocean

We have arrived!

We're all anxious to check into our townhouse!
If we can peel ourselves off this beach, we'd get going!
Boards were around $25
